World Championship Qualifier in Barbados
Bridgetown,
Barbados, June 18, 2005 – Barbados who has dominated volleyball at
the English-speaking Caribbean since 1992 reduced Jamaica to tears
as they put themselves within one set of winning the World
Championships Qualifier Norceca Group A here at the Garfield Sobers
Sports Complex in Barbados. The Jamaicans needed to beat Barbados in
order to clinch the top spot and a trip to the second round.
However, Barbados lead by the tireless captain Elwyn Oxley with nine
kills and his vice captain Renier Grace with seven, displayed a
ruthlessness in destroying Jamaica, 25-17, 25-19, 28-26.While Coach
Ludger Niles used just six players and the tournament’s leading
libero, Dwight Carter to complete the rout of the visitors, Coach
Phillip Greenland used all of his 12 players in a desperate bid to
halt the onslaught of the Bajans. However, only Mark Lewis with six
kills proved any threat to the hosts. Jamaica forced Barbados into
calling a time-out at, 0-5, in the third set with Jamaica looking
like pulling back at least that set.

Barbados takes charge in the women’s event
BRIDGETOWN,
Barbados, June 17, 2005-Host
and number one team Barbados and Dominica scored contrasting wins
when the women’s World Championships Qualifier Norceca Group A
served off here at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex in Bridgetown.
After a stuttering start where Anguilla matched the Bajans point for
point and actually held set point, 24-22, Barbados literally powered
their opponents off of the court with crunching blocks and spikes.
An important kill by Jamaican-born Venessa Straughn at, 22-24, and
then an ace locked the scores, 24-all to then deny Anguilla a fairy
tale start to their Qualifiers. Coach Basil Jemmott wasted no time
in inserting Caribbean MVP Shari Matthews and setter Shennell
Beckles who had returned from the Pan American Cup in Santo
Domingo. With Beckles running the plays, Matthews, captain
Anthazia Yearwood, and six footer Annette Chapman then pounded their
opponents, particularly in the second and third set. Earlier
Dominica edged their OECS sisters St. Kitts in a match that went the
full distance, 21-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-17, 15-12. In the post match

Barbados and Jamaica continue their dominance at World Championship
Qualifier
Bridgetown,
Barbados, June 16, 2005 – Favorites Barbados and Jamaica continued
their dominance at the World Championships Qualifier Norceca Group A
here at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex in Barbados. Jamaica who
were runners-up to Barbados in the 2004 Caribbean Volleyball
Championships, dismissed all pre-tournament threats from the
Netherlands Antilles, 25-20, 25-21, 25- 19, to move to 2/0. Host
Barbados also advanced to 2/0 by whipping the Cayman Islands, 25-16,
25-19, 25-13. With the late arrivals the Netherlands losing their
game to Jamaica in straight sets, the clash between Jamaica and
Barbados on Saturday could be critical in determining who will go on
to the second round of the Qualifiers. Once again the Bajans were
supported by a vociferous crowd as the high leaping Fabian Cox lead
an aerial assault of power hitting against the hapless Cayman
Islanders. There was no ‘cease-fire’ even when coach Ludger Niles
decided to give some court time to the reserves. The Jamaican-based
Adrian Price, Shawn Simpson and junior captain, Daran Gill seized
the playing time to destroy the visitors’ net and court defence to
carry Barbados to an easy triumph. Coach Niles stated in the post
match interview that Barbados was moving towards the next level of
competition mentally and physically to ensure that victories would
be achieved against Jamaica on Saturday and the Netherlands on
Sunday. The Caymans’ coach Shannon Emslie stated that his team’s
goal was to continue competing at this level in order for his
country to fulfill the goal of creating a top volleyball team within
the next five years.

play good ball and hope for the best.” Glen Quinlan (St. Kitts):
“We believe the games are played on the court and because of that
also decided on the court. There have been surprises in the past and
surprises can happen.”

Guatemala was the first to advance
SAN
JOSE, Costa Rica, May 22, 2005.-
They entered the tournament as long shots, but
Guatemala was the first team of the Norceca Pool C to take the step
to the next round at the 2006 Men’s World Championship. Once again,
the Guatemalans were commanded by the attack of Jorge Bolanos in
their straight sets win over Nicaragua 25-21, 25-21, 25-23. Since
the first day of action, Guatemala presented credentials as a team
with good defence and today they showed it too. Nicaragua played its
best match of the competition but the inexperience betrayed them.
Bolanos had 13 points and David Mayorga scored 10 for Nicaragua.
Alvinzi Pelaez, the coach of Guatemala: “I am very happy with the
outcome and even more because we did not have much time of
preparation. Our goal now is to do a good job in the next round.”
Reynaldo Cerda, the coach of Nicaragua: “It was a very tough
competition and will help as good experience. Now we will continue
our preparation for the Central American Games in December.” Hugo
Garcia, the captain of Guatemala: “I feel satisfied with the win.
Now we have to work as a team for the next round. It will be a good
chance to improve playing against the opponents of the second
phase.” Lenin Ruiz, captain of Nicaragua: “I leave content because
we did our best effort, but we need more experience in this type of
competition. Now we need to move on and keep practicing.”

Costa Rica is closer to the second phase
SAN
JOSE, Costa Rica, May 22, 2005.-
Hosts Costa Rica moved closer to a second phase
ticket at the 2006 Men’s World Championship with a rapid win over
the young side of Nicaragua. The Costa Ricans, who had to battle
five sets for their first victory on Friday, dominated the
Nicaraguans in straight sets with all the partials ending with
identical score of 25-19. Coach Alberto Travieso used all his
players and the experience of the local team combined with the
support of the home crowd was more than enough to affect the
concentration of the Nicaraguans who fell to a 0-2 record. The
defence of Costa Rica, especially the performance of libero Alvaro
Cascante, was instrumental in the win of Costa Rica who has a 2-0
record and 6-2 in sets. Alberto Travieso, coach of Costa Rica:
“Today I saw improvement, so what we needed was to get used to
playing conditions. Besides our experience was superior compared
with the young team of Nicaragua and that gave me the chance to use
all my players.” Alexander Villegas, captain of Costa Rica: “We
could establish our fast game and took advantage of their mistakes.
We only need to win tomorrow and we have to take advantage of the
injury problems of the Honduras Team.” Reynaldo Cerda, coach of
Nicaragua: “Although we did not make the second round we are going
to come out to play with enthusiasm because we know our team is one
with a good future.”

Guatemala is back in contention
SAN
JOSE, Costa Rica, May 22, 2005.- Guatemala returned to the run for
one of the two tickets available at the 2006 Men’s World
Championship first round tournament –Norceca Pool C, with a triumph
in four sets over Honduras by score of 25-16, 24-26, 25-20, 25-20.
The blocking and defence of Guatemala was a key ingredient during
the match and completely decoyed the Hondurans’ tactics. Both teams
have now 1-1 records after two of three days of action. Guatemala
lost in five sets to Costa Rica on Friday while Honduras defeated
Nicaragua in straight sets. Hugo Garcia, the captain of Guatemala,
was the star of his side who tomorrow meets Nicaragua. Honduras has
to clear the hurdle of playing against host Costa Rica. Alvinzi
Pelaez, the coach of Guatemala: “Our tactics worked out fine. The
match was very tough, but our blocking worked in the big moments and
the key was our defence.” Rony Martinez, the coach of Honduras: “We
had to change our system due to the injuries and we lost the offence
of Felix Sabio playing him as middle blocker. The Guatemalans played
great and you saw the outcome.” Hugo Garcia, the captain of
Guatemala: “It was another match of high intensity and that is what
we showed today and every time we go out there. Now we have to
concentrate on Nicaragua, because if we don’t win tomorrow this one
means nothing.”
Felix
Sabio, the captain of Honduras: “It was a well fought match, but
that is in the past. We have to focus on winning tomorrow to have
options of advancing to the next phase.”

Dramatic Victory for Costa Rica
SAN
JOSE, Costa Rica, May 20, 2005.-
Costa Rica edged Guatemala
In a
dramatic battle of five sets capping the opening day of action at
the 2006 Men’s World Championship first round tournament –Norceca
Pool C. The score was 25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 20-25, 15-13 and the
support of the local crowd played a key role in boosting the Costa
Ricans who came from behind erasing a 5-8 deficit in the
tie-breaker. Several Guatemalans’ mistakes were capitalized by the
host team led by the combined offense of captain Alexander Villegas,
who had 27 points, and Damley Hutchinson. Alberto Travieso, the
coach of Costa Rica: “They showed their fighting spirit and had a
great match. I think our up and downs were because we haven’t had
enough international matches of preparation.” Alvinzi Pelaez, coach
of Guatemala: “We could not keep the rhythm and that was a key in
the crucial moments. Like the Costa Ricans, the lack of experience
was evident. Now we have to look for consistency the rest of the
tournament.” Alexander Villegas, captain of Costa Rica: “I feel cool
because we won. It was a very hard fought match with up and downs
for both teams.” Hugo Garcia, captain of Guatemala: “We have several
years with this type of matches and today it was no exception. Both
teams know each other. The result could have gone either way,
unfortunately was not in our favor.”

Honduras cruised in victory over Nicaragua
SAN
JOSE, Costa Rica, May 20, 2005.-
Honduras enjoyed a good start at the 2006 Men’s World
Championship first round tournament - Norceca Pool C dispatching
Nicaragua in straight sets by 25-21, 25-23, 25-19. It was a
completely different story than the last time these two teams faced
when they battled for five sets. Felix Sabio led the winners with 18
points. The Hondurans had a well motivated team and despite a couple
of injured players along the match they maintained the rhythm of
their game and could combine the strong offence with clutch
blocking. Nicaragua stayed close during the first half of the sets
but could not maintain the consistency and never had the final
punch. Rony Martinez, coach of Honduras: “In our region the men’s
volleyball is pretty equalled and Nicaragua has a good team. I never
expected a 3-0 outcome. This is a jump start for us. I understand we
need two victories for being in the next round, so now we have one
under our belts.” Reynaldo Cerda, coach of Nicaragua: “I feel some
kind of disappointment because I expected a better match. I think we
made mistake in the worst moments.” Felix Sabio, captain of
Honduras: “I did not expect to win so fast. I was mentally prepared
for four or five sets, but we won easily and is a good motivation
for the next match against Guatemala.” Lenin Ruiz, captain of
Nicaragua: “We have to erased this result and focus in the rest of
the tournament and play hard tomorrow against Costa Rica.”

a site with all the requirements of FIVB for major tournaments as
the Grand Prix and World League,” said Marte. “Guatemala has
responded positively to the request from Dr. Ruben Acosta that this
tournament was successfully organized and show to the world that
Central America also can do it, despite being one of the smallest
region of the world in terms of population.” “As president of
NORCECA we feel more than satisfied and appreciate the job done by
the organizers,” concluded Marte.

Guatemala crushed Panama and advanced to second round
GUATEMALA,
May 15, 2005.-
Host Guatemala crushed Panama 3-0 (25-8, 25-8, 25-19)
in the nightcap of the closing day and advanced to a second round in
the Women’s World Championship Norceca region. The Guatemalans,
backed by the home fans, did not have great resistance from their
opponents. Only in the third set they slowed down their impetus, but
recovered on time to win in straight sets.
David
Aldana, the coach of Guatemala: “In reality Panama have not showed
the power they once had in Central America. But things got
complicated in the third set when we slowed our rhythm after taking
the first two very easily.” Jose Remon, the coach of Panama: “The
team played better despite facing a stronger rival and in better
shape than us. I hope we will be better in December during the
Central American Games.” Maria Orellana, captain of Guatemala: “We
had good attack and played well organized but had problems in the
third set. We had not seen the Panamanians since 2000. We thought
they had a better team, but we hope they continue to participate in
the area events and can improve.” America Ruiz, captain of Panama:
“We started very cold and reacted very late. The Guatemalans are
focused and have level. It has been a good experience for next
December.”

Mexico finished unbeaten the event in Guatemala
GUATEMALA, May 15, 2005.- Mexico defeated Honduras
3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-12) and came out unbeaten during the first
round Norceca Pool C of the Women’s World Championship. The winners
had no trouble to dominate with their better blocking and experience
but never seemed overconfident against a rival with aggressive
serves. Mexico now has to play USA, Canada, Puerto Rico and another
team to be decided in the next round in August where three tickets
for Japan will be available. Ana Mercado led the Mexicans with 14
points and Yendy Cortinas added 11. Caterine Leiva, the only veteran
on the Honduras side, scored 11 and Veis Inestroza had 8. Marco
Heredia, the coach of Mexico: “I am very happy with my first triumph
with the national team despite the short time of preparation. It is
a long way ahead to reach the required level to pass the next phase.
I hope we can get our top shape in August for the next compromise.”
Walter Montes, the coach of Honduras: “We played against the best
team of the tournament who deserved the first place. Today our
serves could have been better. I leave satisfied with my young team
who only had three international matches before facing Mexico.” Bibi
Candelas, captain of Mexico: “We achieved the goal of advancing to
the next phase and what more better than with a first place finish
in this pool.” Caterine Leiva, captain of Honduras: “Today’s match
was very good. I have been playing at this level for a long time and
missed that rhythm. The new ones gained experience and Honduras will
continue forward.”

Nicaragua beat Honduras and secured third place
GUATEMALA,
May 15, 2005.- Nicaragua secured the third place at the Norceca C
First Round of the 2006 Women’s World Championship with a straight
sets victory over Honduras 25-13, 25-17, 25-20. It was the second
win against two losses for Nicaragua finishing with six points and a
record of 8-6 in sets. The Nicaraguans, as the day before against
Panama, commanded the match and took advantage of the inexperience
of their rivals. Honduras was not as effective this time with their
services and could not terminate the opponents when were close in
the score.
Rene Quintana, the coach of Nicaragua: “We are happy with
the third place. It was not our goal but at least got something.
Honduras is a team with great future.” Walter Montes, the coach of
Honduras: “Our team will keep trying with the young players. I think
that will carry our volleyball to new stages.” Mireyines Tellez,
captain of Nicaragua: “The match was relatively easy for us, who are
used to better fight from Honduras, a team with a lot of rookies who
need to play more matches.” Caterine Leyva, captain of Honduras:
“The match was a challenge for me as one of the veterans as also for
the new ones. Some of them are learning the meaning of a
competition, not only playing but controlling nerves and emotions.”

consecutive triumph at the 2006 Women’s World Championship First
Round Norceca C, defeating Panama 3-0 (25-10, 25-9, 25-10) and is

is a good sign, although we know the superiority of our opponents.”

all had the chance to play and is a good help to improve our game
system. Panama made a great effort.” America Ruiz, Captain of

Mexico is unbeaten in Norceca of Guatemala
GUATEMALA,
May 14, 2005.- Mexico recovered from a shaky start and defeated
Guatemala 3-1 (25-27, 25-14, 25-13, 25-16) and is now the only
unbeaten team at the Norceca C first round of the 2006 FIVB Women’s
World Championship. The power and size of the favourites to win the
competition took the team of Marco Heredia to its second victory of
the tournament. The Mexicans had problems with the reception in the
first set but from the second set on they made the adjustments and
improved their serves. Marco Heredia, the Mexican coach: “I am very
happy for the win over a great team. They really deserved to win the
first set because they played very well. It was a tough match, but
at the end we won.” David Aldana, the Guatemalan coach: “The start
of the match gave us a big hope, because we responded well to the
rhythm of Mexico. But we slowed down because the team was tired from
the night before. The opponent dominated with its size and level.”
Bibi Candelas, the captain of Mexico: “We are very happy with the
win, but I want to stress the great effort of our rivals, a team
with a good fighting spirit who never gives up. We hope to win the
next two matches and take the title.” Maria Orellana, captain of
Guatemala: “Yesterday our second setter suffered an injury and we
had to improvise, but the most important think is to keep trying
hard and to finish in second place.”

Nicaragua defeated Panama
GUATEMALA, May 14, 2005.-
Nicaragua obtained its first victory at the 2006 FIVB
Women’s World Championship (First Round Norceca C) defeating Panama
in straight sets by score of 25-18, 25-14, 25-14). The Nicaraguans
had better attack and improved their serves and receptions. Middle
blocker Heidy Trana led the winners with 15 points and Heidy Rostran
followed with 12. Jazmin Rojas led Panama with 6. Rene Quintana, the
coach of Nicaragua: “We won because our team did the job. I was
surprised by the performance and intensity of our rivals. I have
great respect for the opponents, especially a team like Panama, with
great tradition, but now with a lot of injuries.” Jose Remon, coach
of Panama: “I recognize the opponent team is better than our, who is
new and did its best. We have an injury of our tallest player but we
have to finish the tournament. From the start we came without some
players. That is not an excuse but a reality because we did not have
enough time to prepare the team.” Mireyines Tellez, captain of
Nicaragua: “There were moments we had to try very hard, because, as
our coach says, there are no small rivals. You always have to play
seriously because the team at the other side also has the desire to
win.” America Ruiz, captain of Panama: “I think we need to train
more and play more international games. We need more support but
this is a good experience for the young players who now know that
these events are not easy.”

Guatemala takes big step toward second round
GUATEMALA,
May 13, 2005.- Guatemala took a big step in the 2006 Women’s World
Championship with a thrilling victory in five sets over Nicaragua at
the first round tournament Norceca C. It was a repetition of the
match of last November when the Guatemalans edged Nicaragua at its
own soil also in five sets during the Central American Tournament.
The victory by score of 25-20, 9-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-13 put
Guatemala at the top of the standings with a 2-0 record. The two
teams with better records in this competition advance to the second
round in August. Ana Ramirez with 22 points was the top scorer and
the sparkplug of Guatemala. She led four players in double figures
that included Diana Arias (14), Analisse Burmester (12) and Maria
Orellana (10). Nicaraguan Heidy Trana led all the scorers with 26
points that placed her with 36 in two matches only behind Honduran
Caterine Leiva who has 39. A very efficient defence and the rapid
execution was the key for Guatemala who also benefited from the
support of the home fans, especially when they had a good reaction
after a disappointing second set. Maria Orellana, the captain of
Guatemala, congratulated the Nicaraguans “because as always we have
good matches, but we put everything together despite our up and
downs caused by the pressure of playing against strong rivals.”
David Aldana, the coach of Guatemala, said: “The victory reflects
the good work and the support of our federation. Both teams showed
its arsenal and it was a very intense match which could have gone
either way.” Rene Quintana, the coach of Nicaragua, said: “It was a
very hard game, both teams are very similar in service, blocks and
settings, and the score reflects it.”

very offensive services which caused problems to the reception of
Panama. Caterine Leiva had a good offence down the middle and I am
very happy with the job of our young players.” Jose Remon, the coach
of Panama, said: “The match was good, but our mental mistakes were
the cause of the loss. We lack some of our regulars, besides we lost
our middle blocker Anayansi Ortiz with a sprained ankle in
practice.” Caterine Leiva, the captain of Honduras, said: “It is
another step forward. I was a little tired but also I have the
responsibility to give a good example to our younger players. Panama
is a tall team and hits hard.” America Ruiz, the captain of Panama,
said: “The tournament is very competitive and is a good experience,
mainly for the youngsters. Two years ago, Honduras beat us 3-0 and
today we took a set against a team very coordinated.”

Guatemala defeated Honduras in three sets
GUATEMALA,
May 12, 2005.- Guatemala overcame a shaky start and defeated
Honduras 25-18, 25-9, 25-18 in the second match of the evening. The
host team had difficulties dealing with its young opponents, but
once the setter Marie Franz Burmester took confidence, she started
to properly distribute the ball and the points flowed for her side.
The small size is a disadvantage for the hosts, but they overcome
that with other ingredients who led them to their first triumph
tonight and a good start in their goal to grab one of the two
tickets for the next phase. Annelise Burmester led Guatemala with 13
points and Maria Orellana chipped in 10. Honduran Caterine Leiva
topped all the scorers with 16 and Aida Delgado added 11. David
Aldana, the coach of Guatemala said: “The start is always tough. To
play in the Dome is a new experience as is for the visitors. The
important thing is that we overcame the first set problems and took
the needed confidence to take the next two.” Walter Montes, the
coach of Honduras, said: “Despite having only 12 weeks of training,
the match was pretty good. I thought it was going to be better for
us, but I understand that my players don’t have the experience and
seven are juniors, we are planning for long term.”

Beautiful Opening Ceremony in Guatemala
GUATEMALA,
May 12, 2005.- The Folkloric Ballet of the Guatemalan Institute for
Tourism was the main feature of the beautiful cultural and artistic
opening ceremony of the First Round 2006 FIVB Women’s World
Championship (Norceca C) at the Dome of Guatemala. The young dancers
delighted the crowd with choreographic works by architect Julia
Vela, founder of the group in 1990, based on the Guatemalan cultural
values as historic, natural and tourist richness, traditions,
legends and expressions of the different cultural groups of the

of the Norceca C First Round of the World Championship to take place
here in the Dome of Guatemala on May 11-15. Mr. Marte proclaimed,
during the General Technical Meeting, a congratulation message on

What the coaches said before the start in Guatemala
GUATEMALA, May 11,2005.- The coaches of the five
participating teams in the Norceca C First Round 2006 FIVB Women’s
World Championship talked about their goals before the start of the
event during a press conference right alter the technical meeting at
the Grand Tikal Futura Hotel here. Marcos Heredia, Mexico: “I think
it must be a very tough competition. Every team has possibilities.
This is my first event coaching women and I came to battle for the
first place and after that to face what ever comes.” Walter Montes,
Honduras: “We are very motivated because Honduras never had attended
a preliminary to the world championship. Even the fact we have a
very young team, this is what we need, to work with the new talents
and some day aspire to make the podium and prepare us for the
Central American Games also here in Guatemala.” Jose Remon, Panama:
“This is a re-encounter after almost four years out of this level.
In addition to that absence, we have seven players who study in USA
and could not make the trip, but we tried to coordinate the most
experienced with the rookies. Due to the fact of our long absence I
can’t make a prediction here.

Nicaraguans thinking one day in advance
GUATEMALA,
May 11, 2005.- The members of the Nicaragua National Team are
thinking more in their second match than of the one they have
tonight against Mexico in the opening day of the 2006 Women’s World
Championship first round tournament (Norceca Pool C).
The
Nicaraguans, with good reason, have the idea that the match of
Thursday against host Guatemala must decide the team who finishes
second in the five-team event that offer two tickets for the next
phase. Mexico, ranked 28 in the world, is considered by many experts
as a team too strong compared to their rivals, while Panama and
Honduras have not the experience. The Nicaraguans made a long bus
trip to arrive in Guatemala on late Monday and had their first
training session yesterday at the Guatemala City Dome. Despite the
odds against them, the Nicaraguans plan to avenge the five-set lost
they suffered to Guatemala at their own soil during the last Central
American Tournament. The team is basically the same who participated
in that event with the exception of reserve setter Claudia Torres,
who did not make the trip for personal reasons. The sibling pair of
Mercedes and Heidy Trana is very confident of their side as also
feel Heidy Rostran, Claudia Noguera, Mireyines Tellez, Heisell
Carcache, Johanna Padilla, Bertha Fierro, and youngsters Lolette
Rodriguez and Valeska Hernandez. If Nicaragua finishes second, they
will then go to Dominican Republic for a second round event against
the host team and Cuba, Costa Rica and Jamaica. Three tickets to the
2006 World Championship will be available in Santo Domingo.

improve with every year and we hope they do a good job at their own
soil,” said the 21 years-old player. The Mexican Team arrived to
Guatemala with great enthusiasm and avid to show their power. “We
don’t want to underestimate our rivals but I think we can battle for
one berth in the next phase,” she added. The competition format of
the event will be a round-robin single round with the top two teams
advancing to the next phase in two sites: Puerto Rico and Dominican

Netherlands Antilles will be the protagonists of the feature match
in the 2006 Women’s World Championship first round tournament of

very even. They have different strengths and weaknesses. I think
tomorrow will be very close and very exciting. I’m in Jamaica. I
have to pick Jamaica.” Kwele Williams, the British Virgin Islands
coach stated that “the experience, quickness and the home court
advantage will play key factors in favor of Jamaica, a team who
raises the level with the occasion.”

What the coaches had to say before the start in Jamaica
Kwele Williams, British Virgin Islands:
“This is our first opportunity on the big scale. We’ve been
competing in a lot of regional tournaments. We’ve been quite
successful. We’ve won those tournaments and decided to step it up.
First we want to try to feel out the teams. We haven’t really seen
them play so we have to come out trying to execute all game and at
the same time try to step up to the level of the volleyball being
played.”Ortnell
Findlay, Jamaica:
“The home town support is more motivation for the players. With the
crowd coming out to support us, I think we have an extra edge.We
haven’t seen BVI play any volleyball whatsoever so we’re not taking
them lightly and we haven’t seen the Cayman Islands for the last
couple of years. So we don’t know what they have to offer. So we
just have to take it step by step.Andrea Williams, Cayman
Islands:‘I am so happy to be here with the challenges of
Hurricane Ivan and we haven’t had as much time to practice as we
would have liked but the team has really come together in the last
couple of months and I think if they pull it all together, you never
know, maybe we can go all the way.”Gerald Rosina,
Netherlands Antilles: “We
feel very good in Jamaica. We came to win this leg because for us
this is very important to win so our program can grow, the people of
our country can give more support to our team and our team itself to
do better in the Caribbean and Norceca events. We have a very good
team. We left two of the very best players at home because of their
studies. They couldn’t make it this time. We hope to win here.
Afterwards we can bring them to the Dominican Republic for the
second round of qualifying.”

Jamaicans optimistic about qualifying
KINGSTON,
Jamaica, April 14, 2005.- President of Jamaica Volleyball
Association (JAVA) Ms Carole Beckford said yesterday that "our
commitment is to celebrate 45 years this year as an organized sport
in Jamaica by qualifying for our first Women's World Championships
in Japan next year"."We reached the second round of the Qualifiers
in 2001 and at present the team is highly motivated and committed to
qualify for Japan," Beckford added. After the Kingston leg, Jamaica
will move to Santo Domingo for the second leg on August 24-28 to
compete against Cuba, a former Women's World Volleyball
Championships winner, Costa Rica and hosts the Dominican Republic.
From the South American Qualifiers, Jamaica will need to secure one
of the top three spots to advance. In an attempt to make the 'Road
to Japan' a reality for volleyball, one of Jamaica's 17 Olympic
sports, a number of sponsors have lent their support to the
qualifiers and Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) President, Mr. Mike
Fennell was heartened by the gesture: "I thank you all very, very
much for your participation," he said yesterday. Fennell said
"volleyball is a major sport". "When you view the statistics
worldwide," he explained, "it blows your mind - by the viewers of
live television coverage; live spectator audiences; the number of
players taking part; the number of affiliated associations and the
development programs taking place."

Jamaican Coach Confident of his Team’s Chances
KINGSTON,
Jamaica, April 11, 2005.- Jamaica National Female volleyball
technical director , Phillip Greenland, has expressed optimism about
his squad chances of advancing to the next stage of qualifiers for
the November 2006 World Championships that will be held in Japan.
Greenland said despite the fact that the team has not been together
for a long time because of club commitments, the players are capable
of toppling the opposition come April 15-17 when round one of the
North, Central America and the Caribbean Confederation (NORCECA)
qualifiers are played here. "The British Virgin Islands and Cayman
Islands have not yet reached our level so we expect to beat them.
Our greatest challenge should come from the Netherlands Antilles.
They have a deeply entrenched system and thus their talent base is
presumably strong. However, I believe we can beat them too,"
Greenland said. Jamaica is the number two ranked Caribbean team and
47th in the world. In fact, the team is the highest ranked in this
pool of four, with the Netherlands Antilles ranked at 58th and the
other teams unranked. The last time Jamaica embarked on World
Championship qualifying journey in volleyball was in 2001.
