Men of
Puerto Rico were perfect on Day One in Guatemala
GUATEMALA ,
April 20, 2007.- Men’s Teams of Puerto Rico won their five matches
on Friday during the first day of action of the Guatemala Beach
Volleyball Tournament, the second leg of the 2007 NORCECA Circuit
at Campo Marte located in downtown of Guatemala City .
The pair of
Joseph Gil-Ryan Underwood of Puerto Rico-1 prevailed in their
three outings to finish first in Pool D, while the duo of Juan
Carlos Rivera-Abdel Otero of Puerto Rico-2 was successful in two
contests in Pool C.
A total of
22 matches in both genders comprised the opening day before a good
crowd and excellent weather.
Gil-Underwood defeated Winston Calderon-Francisco Castro of
Nicaragua 21-16, 21-16, and then needed three sets to dispatch
Jorge Bolanos-Jose Gonzales of Guatemala 21-17, 16-21, 15-11 and
James Woods-Luis Baide of Honduras 21-19, 17-21, 15-8.
Meanwhile,
Rivera-Otero beat Yunieski Ramirez-Yoendris Alvarez of Cuba 21-18,
21-16 and won 21-14, 21-10 over Luis Alvarado-Alberto Osuna of
Guatemala-2.
In Pool A,
Brad Torsone-Jon Thompson of USA defeated Shawn Seabrookes-St.
Claire Hodge of St. Kitts & Nevis 21-13, 21-18 and Shervin Rankin-Olmey
Thompson of Cayman Islands beat the pair from SKN by 19-21, 21-17,
15-12.
In Pool B,
Marcelo Araya-Jonathan Guevara of Costa Rica won over Sean
Morrison-Christian Francois of Trinidad & Tobago 21-14, 21-17 and
the Trinidadians edged Juan Pozo-Yewddys Perez of Dominican
Republic 21-18, 14-21, 16-14.
