Pachin Vicens Auditorium

Juncos won the title before record crowd

PONCE, Puerto Rico, April 30, 2007.- Two new attendance records were established in the Puerto Rican Women’s Superior League during the last match of the best-of-seven final series won by Juncos in five sets on Sunday.

A paid attendance crowd of 9,068 spectators filled the stands of Pachin Vicens Auditorium and for the first time in history the league surpassed the 200,000 fans barrier reaching a total of 203, 307 for the season. It was an extremely close playoff with five of the seven matches stretching to the limit

Series MVP Karina Ocasio scored 26 points and Eva Cruz added 22 in the 25-19, 25-21, 14-25, 23-25, 18-16 victory over Caguas. American Kim Willoughby led all the scorers with 29 in the losing cause.

At 14-all in the tie-breaker, Ocasio and Willoughby exchanged scoring spikes and with the teams tied up at 16, one kill by Ocasio was followed by an ace of Carolina Rodriguez for the title.

“Thanks to the Lord that this is finally over,” said Juncos rookie coach Xiomara Molero, the former setter of Puerto Rican National Team. “I think the series and the last match were good for the fans and good for volleyball, is all I can say now.”
