Cuba and USA to meet in women’s semifinals
BEIJING, China, August 19, 2008 – Two teams from NORCECA, Cuba and
United States have moved into a semifinal match of the Women's
Volleyball Tournament of the Olympic Games.
The three-time gold medalists Cubans defeated Serbia in straight-sets (26-24,
25-19, 26-24), while the Americans were streched to five sets and
prevailed against Italy by score of 20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-18,
15-6.
Cubans Yumilka Ruiz and Nancy Carrillo each had 12 points, Rosir
Calderon added 11 and Nancy Carrillo and Yanelis Santos tallied 10
apiece.
Logan Tom was the best American with 19 points, Danielle Scott-Arruda
and Tayyiba Haneef each had 17 and Heather Bown added 13.
