Cuban pairs in good position for Beijing
HAVANA, Cuba, December 7, 2007.- The two main Cuban women’s pairs
are in a privileged position for landing spots in the Beijing
Olympic Games.
The two-time Olympics Tamara Larrea and Dalixia Fernandez hope to
be present in their third straight summer competition, now that
they are in 13th place of the rankings for the capital
of China and 20th for the world.
Meanwhile, the younger Milagros Crespo and Imara Estevez are in a
similar situation with their 14th and 22nd positions
respectively, but both pairs with real chances to improve in the
Olympic rankings because each country can only be represented by
two pairs per gender in the Beijing event.
For example, currently Brazil and United States have four pairs
placed among the top 24 and Germany has three, all of them ahead
of Cuba, but two teams of the Brazil and USA and one from Germany
would be out of the Summer Games.
Teams can improve their ranking in next year’s world tour that
will be starting earlier than usual with the first competition
scheduled in Adelaide, Australia on March 25-30, with the events
until July to be considered for the Olympics.
Twenty-four pairs of each gender will take part in the Beach
Volleyball competition of the Olympics with two berths reserved
for China as hosting country.
