Rubén Acosta H. acquitted of all charges after hearing in
Lausanne, Switzerland |
 |
|
Lausanne, 15 March 2006 –
The President of the International Volleyball Federation (Fédération
Internationale de Volleyball, FIVB), Rubén Acosta H., has never
falsified the FIVB’s accounts nor concealed his personal income,
contrary to the claims of the Argentinean Mario Goijman. In its
judgement, announced on 15 March 2006, the Tribunal de police in
Lausanne acquitted the President of the FIVB of all charges
brought against him by the ex-president of the Argentinean
Volleyball Federation.Accusations levelled at the President of
the FIVB over the past three years by Mario Goijman, for
manipulation of accounts and corruption, are null and without
foundation. This judgement is all the more appreciable, since it
has been issued by the Swiss legal system, the reputation of
which Mr Goijman’s attorney himself praised during the hearing,
inviting all International Sports Federations based in
Switzerland to abide by it.

Deeply
distressed by the tragedy that has stricken Southeast Asia, the
world Volleyball community, through the International Volleyball
Federation (FIVB) which I have the honour of presiding, wishes
once again to demonstrate its human values and more specifically
the strong sense of social responsibility and solidarity felt by
all of its associates on the five continents. It is with deep
emotion and grief that I offer our sincere condolences to all of
our friends and partners who may have been affected by this
tragedy, whether they are from Asia or other parts of the world.
As a continuation of its longstanding humanitarian actions with
UNICEF, WHO and UNHCR, the FIVB has decided to make a donation
of 3 million dollars to the United Nations to assist in the
disaster relief efforts.
In keeping with the moral commitments and principles of the FIVB
which have also been mine during my long career spent working
for sports and athletes, I wanted this special aid to go first
to help young people.
With the enthusiastic support of Mr. Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser
to the UN Secretary General on Sport for Development and Peace,
and the Secretary General himself, Mr. Kofi Annan, we are going
to contribute to rebuilding schools and playing fields in the
affected regions, which are home to more than 8 million
volleyball players.
We will also provide structured sports programmes to children
who have lost family members and who have been traumatised by
this catastrophe, in the hope that this will in some modest way
help restore their confidence in the future and bring some
enjoyment back into their lives.

FIVB donate US$3 million in aid for Tsunami Victims
January
7, 2005,-The
Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) has decided to donate
the sum of US$3 million to support the victims of the Tsunami
Disaster, a tragedy that battered countries in the Indian Ocean
region, where at least 165,000 people in 11 nations died. With
tens of thousands still missing and threatened by diseases from the
powerful waves that hit those Southeast Asian countries, the United
Nations said the death toll would keep climbing. Dr. Ruben
Acosta Hernandez, President of the FIVB, decided to fulfill the
social responsibility of the volleyball governing body in accordance
with its Constitution as a humanitarian response to this world
disaster. The announcement will be officially made during a joint
press conference between FIVB, represented by Dr. Acosta, and the
United Nations, represented by its Secretary General Mr. Kofi Annan
and by Mr. Adolf Ogi, Special Advisor for Peace and Development, to

Switzerland.
A
growing list of international figures and organizations have been
positively responding to the United Nations impassioned appeal for

devastated areas could increase the death toll.

The FIVB rejects new Beijing 2008 venue proposals
LAUSANNE,
Switzerland, 09 November 2004 - The Beijing 2008 Olympic
Organising Committee has surprised the FIVB by proposing a
new Beach Volleyball venue after Tiananmen Square had been
officially approved in an official signed document by the
Beijing 2008 Bidding Committee, the city of Beijing and the
FIVB. The FIVB has no choice but to reject the new venue.
According to the Olympic Charter the FIVB is the only body
competent to approve venues for its sport. Even if the IOC
agrees with BOCOG regarding technical aspects of the venue,
it is not the sole competence of the IOC or BOCOG to make
such an evaluation. The FIVB faces the same issue with
Volleyball.
