Castillo elected as Dominican Athlete of the Year

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, February 2, 2010 – Brenda Castillo, the much heralded Dominican libero, has been named the 2009 Athlete of the Year by her country National Olympic Committee.

The announcement was made Monday night by Luis Mejia, President of the DR Olympic Committee, during the annual Gala Dinner of the institution held at Renaissance Jaragua Hotel in Santo Domingo.

Among her last year’s many awards Castillo was selected as Most Valuable Player of the FIVB Junior Women’s World Championship where Dominican Republic won the silver medal.

“I still can’t believe it,” said Castillo almost in tears. “I want to dedicate this award to God, then to my family and also to Cristobal Marte and my coaches.”

“This is the biggest thing that ever happened in my life, and it is of great motivation to pursue higher goals as a player,” she added.

Back to composure and asked about those goals, her response was: “I am sure there is a lot of mambo ahead.”

The ceremony was attended by Felipe Payano, Minister of Sports, Cristobal Marte Hoffiz, FIVB First Executive Vice President, Rafael Menicucci, President of Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana, which sponsors the event, and leaders of the different national federations.
