Corozal wakes up in Puerto Rico Final Series


COROZAL, Puerto Rico, February 2, 2010 – Defending champions Corozal recorded its first victory in the Puerto Rico Men’s Final Series by sweeping Guaynabo 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 on Monday relying on a balanced attack and strong defense at the net .

 

Losers of the first two matches of the best-of-seven playoffs, Corozal dominated this time with an overwhelming advantage in the blocking category outscoring its rivals 16-4. The fourth match of the series will be played on Tuesday in Guaynabo.

 

“It is a very important victory for us,” said David Aleman, the coach of Corozal. “We made the adjustments in our blocking and our reception improved. Now we must go for a win in Guaynabo and start a brand new series.”

 

Robert Nilson (11), Mathew McKinney (10) and Casey Patterson (10) finished in double-figures in scoring for Corozal. David Menendez compiled five blocks among his 8 points and Enrique Escalante had four blocks and 7 points in the winning effort.

 

Eric Vance charted 10 points for Guaynabo including three serving aces, and Lucas Chavez added 8 points with two blocks.
