CAIRO, Egypt, February 8, 2010- The African
volleyball Confederation (CAVB) lost one of the
great pillars of volleyball all over the world
after the CAVB Vice- President Mr. Baba Sy
passed away in the capital of Senegal in Dakar
on Monday after a long illness.
Baba Sy, who is also a member of the FIVB
coaching commission, was one of the major
anchors of the development of the sport not only
in Africa but also in most of the world
continents through his participation in
worldwide courses. He sincerely cared about the
the development of the game and never ceased to
offer the best of his expertise, effort and time
towards its growth.
He has generously given his heart and mind
during his many years of fruitful service at
CAVB, and stayed to work for the African
volleyball till the last day of his life.
The CAVB Board of administration had decided in
its last meeting to establish a new competition
under the name of “Baba Sy Challenger” for the
teams qualifying to the FIVB competitions as a
preparation for the African teams.
CAVB President Dr. Amr Elwani received this news
with deep sadness and sent a mourning letter to
his small family in Dakar and the volleyball
family all over the world.
