HAVANA, Cuba, January 18, 2010 – The Cuban
Volleyball National League Tournament with four
teams in both genders will be played from
January 29 to March 20 covering six provinces of
Cuba.
Pinar del Rio, in the western part of the
island, Villa Clara, Sancti Spiritus and Ciego
de Avila, in the central zone, and Camaguey in
the eastern, will host the eliminatory rounds
while Havana will host the final stage starting
on March 15.
“More than 40 players per gender will take part,
including the top members of the senior and
junior national teams, the latter engaged with
their preparation to qualify to the Youth
Olympic Games,” said Elio Gomez, the
tournaments’ technical director.
The participating teams will be Occidentales,
Centrales, Orientales and Capitalinos with the
possibility of entries from Venezuela, whose
national teams have been in the island training
and competing in the recent past.
As it has been in previous editions, the final
will be played between the top two finishers
following the round robin competition with an
All-Star Game between the champions and a
selection of the losing teams.
The results of the event will be of key
importance for the integration of the different
teams towards the key international commitments
as the Central American and Caribbean Games in
Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, the World Championships
in Italy and Japan later this year and both
NORCECA’s Pan American Cups in Mexico (women)
and Puerto Rico (men).
