FIVB and NORCECA will join efforts to help victims in Haiti

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, January 19, 2010 – The FIVB and the Norceca Confederation will join efforts in a campaign to raise funds, food and medicines destined to alleviate in the short term the suffering of millions of Haitians and to help the rebuilding of the Volleyball infrastructure of the country devastated by the occurrence of a huge earthquake on January 12.

Reports from the FIVB headquarters in Lausanne indicate that Mr. Jizhong Wei, President of the organization, is currently encouraging sport institutions around the world to come to the aid of millions left homeless and in urgent need of assistance and compassion.

FIVB as a history of helping those in sorrow and material loss as it was in the case of the Asian nations affected by the tsunami resulting from a powerful earthquake in 2004 that killed nearly 230,000 people in fourteen countries. It has been estimated that near 200,000 were killed by the disastrous natural event in Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere.

Mr. Cristobal Marte Hoffiz, President of NORCECA Confederation, which groups 42 countries and territories in the North, Central America and Caribbean region, and FIVB First Executive Vice President, is circulating a letter requesting aid for those left in desperate circumstances.

Marte Hoffiz states the situation “demands a common action of mercy from everyone who can contribute to relief the spiritual pain and provide the necessary medicine, food, water, as well as to supply material assistance for this nation in desperate need of help.”

He adds that “Volleyball did not escape the effects of the disaster as the only playing facility in the country was completely destroyed and the family home of Jacques Joachim, former FIVB Board of Administration member and one of NORCECA founders, collapsed causing the death of his wife.”

Marte Hoffiz considers “the unfortunate set of circumstances the country is facing, affords the Volleyball Family throughout the world the opportunity to aid in the rebuilding process of Haiti, including the sport infrastructure.”

The NORCECA Volleyball Confederation has created a special fund for those compassionate friends and institutions around the world with desire to alleviate the suffering of our volleyball brothers in Haiti and to contribute to rebuild their sport infrastructure.
