SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, January 24,
2010 – The NORCECA Volleyball Confederation made
a donation of 20,000 bottles of water as
emergency help to assist the victims of the
earthquake that struck Haiti last January 12.
The sport institution based in Dominican
Republic, which shares with Haiti the island of
Hispaniola, delivered the aid through the Civil
Defence, a Dominican government organization
participating in the distribution of the
donations in the impoverished country.
Mr. Nelson Ramirez, Executive Director of
NORCECA and Mrs. Arateide Caceres, Coordinator
of National Federations, handed over the supply
to Navy Captain Héctor D’Oleo, Deputy Director
of the Civil Defence.
Providing access to clean water is considered
essential in the immediate aftermath of
disasters to avoid a second wave of deaths
caused by epidemic diseases.
"Our purpose is to mitigate the needs of those
suffering such devastating losses,” said
Ramirez. “We have been monitoring the situation
and at the moment, the need of water in Haiti is
critical.”
The earthquake, which reached 7.0 on the Richter
scale, has left three million people in
desperate need of emergency aid.
Since then about, 50 aftershocks of magnitude
4.5 or higher have hit the area destroying much
of the local infrastructure.
Last week, FIVB President Mr. Jizhong Wei
encouraged all sport institutions around the
world to come to the aid of millions left
homeless and in urgent need of assistance and
compassion.
The President of NORCECA, Mr. Cristobal Marte
Hoffiz added “the unfortunate set of
circumstances the country is facing, affords the
Volleyball family throughout the world the
opportunity to help in the rebuilding process of
Haiti, including the sporting infrastructure.”
The NORCECA Volleyball Confederation has created
a special fund for those compassionate friends
and institutions around the world with a desire
to alleviate the suffering in Haiti.
