Dominican Republic and Mexico suffered tough losses

MEXICALI, Mexico, July 19, 2008.- Brazil held off a resilient Dominican Republic to finish atop Pool C of FIVB Women’s Junior World Championship with a five-set victory on Saturday.

In a battle of 2 hours and four minutes between unbeaten teams in Mexicali, the six-time World Champions prevailed over the Dominicans by score of 25-23, 17-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-11.

The balanced attack of Brazil featured five players in double-figures with Aparecida Oliveira recording 13 points and Natiele Gonzalves and Glauciele Silva 12 apiece. Isadora Rodrigues and Beatriz Correa chipped in 11 and 10 respectively.

Dominican Jeoselyna Rodriguez had a match-high 24 points and Lisvel Eve added 17 in the losing cause.

Another battle at the State Auditorium of Mexicali saw Netherlands defeating Mexico by score of 25-17, 17-25, 25-19, 25-23 to win Pool A.

Dutch Anne Buijs led her side with 16 points while Nicole Koolhaas and Lonneke Sloetjes charted 13 and 12 for the triumph.

Samantha Bricio paced Mexico with 16 tallies and Andrea Rangel and Cecilia Rios chipped in 12 and 11 points.

Meanwhile in Tijuana, Bulgaria had to battle hard to defeat Cuba 25-23, 25-22, 27-29, 25-23 in 1 hour and 44 minutes and take second place position in Pool D.

Bulgarian Dobriana Rabadzhieva recorded 21 points and Elitsa Vasileva added 15 while Viktorina Grigorova and Gabriela Tsvetanova contributed 10 apiece.

Cuban Wilma Salas also scored 21 points and Yudith Pumariega, Yoana Palacios and Gyselle Silva added 17, 15 and 12 respectively.

In Pool D, Turkey did a quick job of just 68 minutes against USA winning 25-20, 25-20, 25-16 to take first place of the group.

Polen Uslupehlivan topped Turkey with 10 points. Gozde Yilmaz added 9 and Busra Cansu, Nesve Buyukbayram and Melis Gurkaynak chipped in 7 apiece for the win. Alexandra Hunt paced USA with 11 points.
