Day One in Jamaica without surprises

KINGSTON, Jamaica, June 26, 2009.- The first day of action in the fourth leg of the 2009 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit at Barbicon Park of the Jamaican capital happened without major surprises. Eight of the nine participating teams advanced to the second round of the tournament.

 

The men’s tem of Puerto Rico and the women’s team of United States lead their respective genders with two victories in the pool phase.

 

The Puerto Ricans Roberto Rodriguez and Orlando Irizarry defeated Netherlands Antilles (Homi Cathalina and Aegidio Juliana) 21-14, 21-15 and then edged in a well fought match the Mexican pair of Juan Virgen and Aldo Miramontes by score of 15-21, 21-18, 15-8.

 

Meanwhile, the Americans Emily Day and Claire Robertson advanced as the top team in the second phase of the women following their win over Puerto Rico (Yarleen Santiago-Dariam Acevedo) by score of 21-18, 15-21, 15-8 and their easy and quick victory over Canada (Kristina Long-Renee Laroque) 21-6, 21-10.

 

The double elimination round kicks-off on Saturday with ten matches in each gender starting at 10:00 a.m. In the women side the first matches features USA-Canada, Trinidad & Tobago-Dominican Republic, Costa Rica-St. Lucia and Guatemala-Puerto Rico.

 

The first matches on the men’s side are Puerto Rico-St. Lucia, Guatemala-Jamaica, Costa Rica 2-Dominican Republic and Costa Rica-Mexico.
