Vargas and Metcalf contributed to Murcia 2002
victory in Top Teams Cup
MUNSTER, Germany, March 15, 2007.- Dominican Annerys Vargas and
American Nancy Metcalf played key roles in the triumph of the
Spaniard team Grupo 2002 Murcia at the Women’s Top Teams Cup
2006-07.
Grupo 2002 Murcia, considered by the experts as the strongest
European club in women’s volleyball, defeated CSKA Moscow in
straight sets 25-20, 25-16, 25-21 in the match for the gold medal.
Vargas booked the last three points of the third set to seal the
first international victory for the Spaniard team. Metcalf
combined her power with Polish Agata Mroz to take the second set,
while MVP Liobuv Kilic of Russia and Polish Malgorzata Glinka led
the attack during the first set.
In earlier action, German Schweriner SC won the bronze medal,
defeating Plantina Longa Lichtenvoorde of The Netherlands 3-0
(25-20, 25-21, 25-18).
Metcalf and Vargas also contributed to the victory of Grupo 2002
Murcia at the Copa de la Reina Tournament in San Sebastian, Spain
on February 22-25.
Lefty Metcalf and Vargas scored 11 and 10 points respectively in
the decisive match against Jamper Aguere won by their side in
straight sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-18).
