USA and Cuba crowned in Boca Chica Beach Volleyball

 

BOCA CHICA, Dominican Republic, March 23, 2008.- Americans Ed Ratledge-David Fischer and Cubans Ion Canet-Nirian Sinal were crowned as the champions of the Boca Chica Beach Volleyball Tournament sponsored by Presidente Light with a total prize money of US$10,000.

 

Ratledge-Fischer came from behind to edge the Puerto Rican (2) pair of Orlando Irrizarry-Roberto Rodriguez in an emotional match by score of 18-21, 21-13, 17-15. Meanwhile, Canet-Sinal beat the Costa Rican duo of Ingrid Morales-Natalia Alfaro by score of 21-14, 21-16.

 

In the matches for the bronze medals the women of Puerto Rico beat Trinidad & Tobago 21-16, 21-19, and in the men’s side Jamaica defeated Puerto Rico 1 by score of 21-15, 24-22.

 

The American tandem entered the final contest following an easy 21-11, 21-14 triumph over the Jamaica pair of Mark Lewis-Dany Wilson.

 

The Puerto Ricans reached the gold medal match with a well fought three-set victory over their fellow countrymen of Puerto Rico 1 (Abdell Otero-Juan Carlos Rivera) by score of 16-21, 21-15, 15-12.

 

The Cubans took a semi final victory over Trinidad & Tobago 21-10, 21-16 while the Costa Ricans had to play hard to beat Puerto Ricans Sheila Lopez-Maria Teresa Ramos by score of 21-18, 16-21, 15-6.

 

In other men’s matches, Barbados defeated St. Kitts & Nevis 21-18, 21-13 for the ninth place, and Costa Rica 2 edged Guatemala 21-12, 15-21, 15-10 for the eleventh place.

Gold Medal: USA d. PUR 2 (18-21, 21-13, 17-15). Women: CRC d. PUR (21-18, 16-21, 15-6), CUB d. TTO (21-10, 21-16). Bronze Medal: PUR d. TTO (21-16, 21-19). Gold Medal: CUB d. CRC (21-14, 21-16).
