Americans Wight-Bruning victorious in Grand Cayman

GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands, March 29, 2009.- The USA-1 Team of  Jason Wight and Michael Bruning came out victorious in the match for the gold medal of the Cayman Islands Beach Volleyball Tournament, the first leg of the Norceca Circuit, before a crowd of around 1,500 fans.

 

The Americans defeated the Cuba team of Sergio Gonzalez and Karell Peña in consecutive sets. The first set was a battle with nine tied-scores won by Wight-Bruning 22-20, who then controlled the second one 21-17.

 

In the match for the bronze medal, Ahren Cadieux-Richard Van Huizen of Canada edged Orlando Irizarry-Roberto Rodriguez of Puerto Rico by score of 16-21, 21-15, 15-12.

 

Cubans Gonzalez-Peña reached the last match of the competition by defeating Irizarry-Rodriguez but not without a tough battle in a long first set. The score was 33-31, 21-16.

 

Americans Wight-Bruning beat Canadians Cadieux-Van Huizen 25-23, 21-19.

 

In the match for the 9-10 positions, Jorge Bolaños-Erick Garrido of Guatemala defeated Christian Francois-Kevin Rivers of Trinidad & Tobago 21-10, 21-11.

 

Men’s Results on Sunday: Semi Finals: CUB d. PUR (33-31, 21-16), USA-1 d. CAN (25-23, 21-19). 9-10 Positions: GUA d. TTO (21-10, 21-11). Bronze Medal Match: CAN d. PUR (16-21, 21-15, 15-12). Gold Medal Match: USA-1 d. CUB (22-20, 21-17).

 

Men’s Final Positions: 1. USA-1, 2. CUB, 3. CAN, 4. PUR, 5. DOM, 6. JAM, 7. USA-2, 8. CAY, 9. GUA, 10. TTO.
