Cuban pairs in good position for Beijing

HAVANA, Cuba, December 7, 2007.- The two main Cuban women’s pairs
are in a privileged position for landing spots in the Beijing
Olympic Games.
The two-time Olympics Tamara Larrea and Dalixia Fernandez hope to
be present in their third straight summer competition, now that
they are in 13 place of the rankings for the capital
of China and 20th for the world.
Meanwhile, the younger Milagros Crespo and Imara Estevez are in a
similar situation with their 14 and 22nd positions
respectively, but both pairs with real chances to improve in the
Olympic rankings because each country can only be represented by
two pairs per gender in the Beijing event.

BRANDONS BEACH, Barbados.- Jamaicans Dany Wilson / Mark Lewis and
the Barbados pair of Anthazia Mason / Sharon Bovell completed
clean sweeps of the Men’s and Ladies competition of the Sizzlin
Sand Caribbean SUNSPLASH events for 2007 when they won their
respective divisions in the Barbados SUNSPLASH at Brandons Beach
last month.
Mason / Bovell faced the Trinidadian pair of Nancy Joseph / Elki
Philips in the ladies final and gave hometown fans lots to cheer
about in a hard fought 21-13, 14-21, 15-10 victory over their
Trinidadian rivals.

HAVANA, Cuba, October 15, 2007.- The two more important women
pairs of Cuba are in the process of preparation aiming to a
good finish during the last series of the Beach Volleyball
World Tour in Thailand from October 31 to November 4.
Tamara Larrea-Dalixia Fernández and Milagros Crespo-Imada
Estévez are placed among the top 12 of the Olympic ranking
after 13 and 14 participations respectively, of the 17 phases
composing the premier competition of Beach Volleyball,

blistering sunshine the 2007 edition of the Sizzlin Sand Beach
Volleyball Caribbean SUNSPLASH Series spiked off October 6-7
at Jolly Harbour Antigua with a bang.
With $ 5,000 USD in prize money
at stake sixteen teams representing Jamaica, Barbados,
Trinidad and Tobago, St. Kitts and host country Antigua
converged on Castaways Beach and provided fans with two
pulsating days of top class beach volleyball.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, July 22, 2007.-
The Brazilian duo of Ricardo Santos and Emanuel Rego added
today the only missing gem in their huge collection of medals
and trophies: The Pan American Gold.
Ricardo & Emanuel defeated Americans Ty Loomis & Hans Stolfus
21-19, 21-13 in the final match of the Men’s Beach Volleyball
Tournament of the Pan American Games Rio 2007 played on Sunday
before a packed arena in the famous Copacabana Beach.
The Athens Olympic champions now have been crowned four times
as monarchs of the FIVB World-Tour in 2003-06 and three times
as champions of the Brazilian circuit.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, July 21, 2007 – It was a glorious day
at Copacabana Beach, in particular for host nation Brazil.
The feature match of the day saw the gold medal match between
Brazil’s team of Juliana Silva & Larissa Franca and Cuba’s
Dalixia Fernandez & Tamarra Larrea. While the Cubans put up
a good fight, Brazil did not disappoint the crowd, and
defeated the Cubans in straight sets with scores of 21-15,
21-17.
“We had butterflies in our stomachs at the beginning of the
match, but then we could focus and went back to be the real

2007 – Cubans Dalixia Fernandez and Tamara Larrea advanced to
the semi finals of women’s beach volleyball relying on their
strong net play against Maxwell/Lessard of Canada winning
21-13, 21-16.
In the other semi-final,
Brazilians Larissa/Juliana advanced by defeating the Mexican
team of Candelas/Garcia 21-12, 21-13 in front of an
enthusiastic Brazilian crowd.

and Brazil were successful in their quarter-final matches
today and advance to the semi-finals in women’s beach
volleyball.
Lessard/Maxwell from Canada defeated Mena/Hernandez from
Uruguay in the first quarter-final match of the day with
scores of 21-11 and 21-10. The Canadian pair was pleased with
the support of the fans. “With many fans cheering us, we felt
confident,” commented Sarah Maxwell following the win, “We
knew how the other duo plays and we knew that we were going to
run a lot on the court. Our defense was required many times,
but it was worth the effort now that we are qualified for the

from eleven countries in both genders will participate in
the first leg of the five-stop 2007 Norceca Beach Volleyball
Circuit to be held on the sands of Boca Chica, outside of
the Dominican capital next weekend.
Canada, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican
Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts &
Nevis, Trinidad & Tobago and United States of America have
registered their representatives for the event sponsored by
Presidente Light Beer.

Beach Volleyball starts today in Cartagena
CARTAGENA,
Colombia, July 19, 2006.- The Beach Volleyball Tournament of the XX
Central American and Caribbean Games starts on Wednesday at Playa
Boquillas. Twelve pairs in both genders will compete divided in two
pools. Countries participating in both genders are Colombia, Cuba,
Mexico, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, El Salvador,
Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados and Guatemala, while St.
Marteen will be entering a men’ pair and Honduras a women’s duo. “A
hard work has been done in the preparation of the competition area
and everything is ready for the best beach volleyball competition in
the history of the Games,” said Mr. Cristobal Marte, the president
of NORCECA. “The warm-up courts are ready and we have seen several
teams training and the enthusiasm is great,” said Mr. Carlos
Beltran, who leads the control committee. “We will have a good level
competition and the fans will support this historic event.” In the
2002 edition in El Salvador, the Puerto Rican pair of Ramon
Hernandez and Raul Papaleo won the men’s gold medal while Mexicans
Hilda Gaxiola and Mayra Ortiz took the women’s first place.

Strickland and Roberts won the gold at NORCECA
BOCA
CHICA, Dominican Republic, April 17, 2006.- Americans William
Strickland and Adam Roberts took the gold medal at the NORCECA
Men’s Continental Beach Volleyball Tournament. Strickland-Roberts
defeated Dominican Juan Pozo-Francisco Abreu 21-9, 21-14 in the semi
final match and then won by default against Puerto Ricans Raul Papaleo and Joseph Gil. Gil aggravated his physical condition during
the Puerto Rican triumph over Costa Ricans Gilberto and Alexander
Villegas 21-13, 21-19 in the semi finals. He was favoring his
injured left calf and ended experiencing problems with his right
hip. In the match for the bronze medal, the Villegas brothers edged
Pozo-Abreu in an exciting match by score of 19-21, 21-14, 17-15.

Strickland-Roberts heavily favourites in NORCECA Beach Volley Event
BOCA
CHICA, Dominican Republic, April 16, 2006.- Americans William
Strickland and Adam Roberts qualified in first place in the double
elimination round of the NORCECA Men’s Continental Beach Volleyball
Tournament by winning their two matches on Saturday. The pair from
California will meet Dominicans Juan Pozo and Francisco Abreu during
the semi finals on Sunday. In the other semi final match, Puerto
Ricans Raul Papaleo and Joseph Gil will play against Costa Ricans
Gilberto and Alexander Villegas. On Saturday, Strickland-Roberts,
winners of Pool B, first defeated Carlos Leiva and Jeovanny Medrano
of El Salvador 21-15, 21-11 and then won by default against Papaleo-Gil
due to a calf injury of Gil. In early matches, Papaleo-Gil defeated
Pozo-Abreu 21-13, 21-11 and Villegas brothers 21-17, 21-19. The
Costa Ricans beat Dominicans Ezequiel Castillo-Roberto de Jesus
21-14, 21-11 and Pozo-Abreu 21-14, 21-5. Pozo-Abreu entered the semi
final round by defeating Salvadorians Leiva-Medrano by score of
29-27, 21-19.

Americans and Costa Ricans dominate first day in Boca Chica Beach

CHICA, Dominican Republic, April 15, 2006.- Costa Ricans brothers
Alexander and Gilberto Villegas and Americans William Strickland and
Adam Roberts led their respective pools with unbeaten record (3-0)
during the first day of action of the NORCECA’s Men Continental
Beach Volleyball Tournament. Playing in Pool A, Villegas siblings
first defeated Jeovanny Medrano and Carlos Leiva of El Salvador
23-21, 21-17, then beat Dominican Republic II (Jewddys Perez-Charly
Vargas) 21-12, 21-18 and Dominican Republic I (Juan Pozo-Francisco
Abreu) 21-12, 21-17. In Pool B, Strickland-Roberts crushed Dominican
Republic III (Ezequiel Castillo-Roberto de Jesus) 21-8, 21-13 and
Dominican Republic IV (Charles Hodge-Alex Soriano) 21-10, 21-10,
before bettering Puerto Ricans Raul Papaleo-Joseph Gil 25-23, 22-20
in a match between the two favourites.
