Americans Dalhausser and May Treanor, Named 'Most Outstanding Players' of the 2008 Games

   

BEIJING, China, August 27, 2008.- After teaming with Todd Rogers to win the United States’ second beach volleyball gold medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Phil Dalhausser was named the Most Outstanding Player for the men’s competition at Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground.

American Stanley MVP in Beijing, Cubans Calderon and Santos among best players

 

BEIJING, China, August 27, 2008 - USA's Clayton Stanley, the FIVB-ranked MVP, Best Scorer and Best Server in the Men's Olympic Volleyball Tournament, pinpointed the factors for the Americans' success that saw them match USSR as the most-decorated Men's Olympic champions with three gold medals apiece.

 

Cubans Rosir Calderon and Yanelis Santos ranked as best Spiker and Server respectively of the women’s tournament and American Logan Tom was the best scorer. Brazilian Paula Pequeno was elected as MVP.

 

'Team spirit, key athletes and great staff,' said Stanley after USA's 3-1 victory over Brazil in Sunday's final.

Dr. Rubén Acosta becomes FIVB Honorary President after 24 years of leadership

Beijing, August 24, 2008 – Dr. Rubén Acosta officially transferred the FIVB presidency to Mr. Jizhong Wei at a special Handover Ceremony in Beijing on Sunday after 24 years of peerless success as leader of Volleyball’s world governing body. “I am retiring today from the presidency at the closing of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games so that a new era can unfold for the FIVB,” said Dr. Acosta.
 
With his wife Malú by his side, Dr. Acosta delivered a warmly received speech to distinguished guests and media from around the world in which he called for the Volleyball Family to continue to support FIVB President Wei as he embarks on his new role at the FIVB.

USA Men Find Glory and Gold at the End of Olympic Games

 

BEIJING, China, August 24, 2008.-  The U.S. Men’s Olympic Volleyball Team put tragedy aside and embraced triumph as it defeated defending Olympic champion and world No. 1-ranked Brazil, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23, and won the Olympic gold medal on Sunday at Capital Gymnasium.

USA Women Claim Olympic Silver Medals

 

BEIJING, China, August 23, 2008.- The U.S. Olympic Women's Indoor Volleyball Team had its run toward a first-ever Olympic Games gold medal end just short of the target with a loss to top ranked-Brazil 15-25, 25-18, 13-25, 25-21 Saturday evening in the Olympic Games title match at Beijing's Capital Gymnasium.

 

The U.S. silver medal matched its previous best finish from the 1984 Olympic Games. Team USA, ranked fourth in the world by the FIVB, also finished with a bronze in 1992, its last time reaching the medal round.

 

The Americans defeated second-ranked Italy in the quarterfinals and third-ranked Cuba in the semifinals to reach the gold-medal match, but ran into a hot Brazil squad that had not lost a single set in the tournament before the night started.  More Spanish

Dalhausser & Rogers snare second USA Olympic Beach Volleyball gold medal

USA down Russia to make final

 

BEIJING, China, August 22, 2008 - One day after the American women secured their first final berth in 24 years at Olympic volleyball, the American men spikers also clinched the final ticket for the first time in 20 years after holding off Russia in a five-set semi-final.

 

With the hard-fought 25-22, 25-21, 25-27, 22-25, 15-13 victory, its seventh straight at this tournament, the world No. 3 took a sweet revenge on its 3-0 loss to the European runner-up in the bronze medal match of the Athens Games four years ago.

 

It will be the second time in history that both teams of the United States make the men's and women's volleyball finals of an Olympic Games at the same time. Americans May-Treanor, Walsh Make History on the Beijing Beach

 

BEIJING, August 21, 2008.- The U.S. team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh won their second consecutive gold medal in women's Olympic beach volleyball (2004, 2008) by defeating top-ranked Tian Jia and Wang Jie of China 2-0 (21-18, 21-18) on Thursday in the pouring rain at the Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Grounds.

 

A packed house of 12,200 sang, chanted and clapped in pastel-colored rain ponchos while enjoying the hard-fought match.

 

“Although the rain makes the ball heavier and can interfere with vision, the rain made it better,” said Walsh. “We felt like warriors out there. It's an honor to win this gold medal. It was a team effort."

USA Women to play for the Olympic Gold Medal

USA survives Serbia to set up semi with Russia

 

BEIJING, August 20, 2008.- The United States powered past Serbia in the fourth and fifth set to win the final Men's Volleyball quarterfinal of the day 20-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 15-12.

 

The USA team, winners of the 2008 FIVB World League, will play Russia in the semifinals on August 22.

Morales/Alfaro, Araya/Piskulich: Central American Champions

 

GUATEMALA, August 19, 2008.- Ingrid Morales and Natalia Alfaro of Costa Rica were crowned as Champions of the Eighth Central American Cup of Beach Volleyball.

 

Morales/Alfaro faced Ivonne Soler/Laura Molina of El Salvador in the finals. The champions won by score of  21-13, 21-17.

 

María José Orellana/Ana Lourdes Ramírez of Guatemala, won the bronze medal by defeating the pair of Costa Rica 2 of Ivette Alas/Marianela Alfaro by score of 21-18, 21-12.

Cuba and USA to meet in women’s semifinals

 

BEIJING, China, August 19, 2008 – Two teams from NORCECA, Cuba and United States have moved into a semifinal match of the Women's Volleyball Tournament of the Olympic Games.

 

The three-time gold medalists Cubans defeated Serbia in straight-sets (26-24, 25-19, 26-24), while the Americans were streched to five sets and prevailed against Italy by score of 20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-18, 15-6.

 

Cubans Yumilka Ruiz and Nancy Carrillo each had 12 points, Rosir Calderon added 11 and Nancy Carrillo and Yanelis Santos tallied 10 apiece.

USA Men power past Japan

 

BEIJING, China, August 18, 2008 - USA easily beat Japan (25-18, 25-12, 25-21) at Capital Gymnasium on Monday and qualified in first place of Pool A with a 5-0 mark.

 

Ryan Millar was the top scorer for USA with 10 tallies. David Lee and Clayton Stanley each added 9 points while Reid Priddy and Riley Salmon contributed 7 apiece.

 

Hugh McCutcheon, USA head coach: "I'm quite happy with the team. Our focus and execution was there for all phases. I believe this was a better performance than the match against China. It is always our goal to improve each and every match, and I think we did that in the preliminaries."

Eugenio George Lafita, the Volleyball guru, still fighting for the gold

 

Beijing, China, August 18, 2008 - George Eugenio Lafita is 75. He’s the man behind the Cuban Women’s Volleyball team, the brain that since 1969 has guided training programs and matches. After 2000, he decided to step aside during the matches and act only as Assistant Coach. Everyone knows that he and Head Coach Antonio Perdomo act as one, carefully dividing up responsibilities during the game. And Eugenio Lafita is still a leader.

 

Lafita was a spiker for the Cuban Volleyball team from 1956. 1n 1963 he started coaching the Men’s team in Cuba, leading them in the World Championship in Prague in 1966. More


Cuba advanced to quarterfinals with perfect record

 

BEIJING, August 17, 2008 -- Cuba will go to the Women's Volleyball tournament as the top finisher in Pool A after handing Venezuela the fifth straight loss of its Olympic debut. The 25-20, 25-20, 25-19 win was Cuba's fifth straight in Beijing and confirms their status as a gold medal contender.

 

Cuba will play Pool B's fourth finisher, either Russia or Serbia in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

St Kitts and Nevis takes lion share of awards

 

BASSETERE, St. Kitts.- The 2008 OECS Male Volleyball championships climaxed last evening with the bronze and gold medal places being contested. The championship which was being contested by five teams was held over a four day period at the Marriott Dome; saw St Kitts and Nevis capturing four of the seven special awards at stake.

 

Defending champions Dominica found the going too tough and they failed to reach the finals. However in the bronze medal match Dominica made amends for their preliminary round defeat to St Martin and had sweet revenge when they beat them 3-0. More

 


American Men qualified to quarterfinals

 

BEIJING, China, August 16, 2008 - The American Men had no trouble in defeating host China in straight sets at the Beijing Institute of Technology. The Americans won by score of 25-22, 25-12, 25-18.

 

Clayton Stanley and Riley Salmon led the USA scoring with 14 and 10 points respectively and Ryan Miller and David Lee contributed 9 apiece.

 

With the fourth triumph in hand, the United States, the World League champion this year, qualified for the final eight with one match remaining, but China's outlook of making the quarter-finals turned vague with a 2-2 win-loss record.
