Mother of Caceres Veloz passed away
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, June 18, 2007.-
The Dominican Republic National Federation and the NORCECA
Confederation inform, with deep sorrow, the death of Ms. Juana
Felicia Veloz, mother of journalist Jose Caceres Veloz, former
press officer of the Dominican institution and President of
the Press Commission of the continental organization.
The day of the funerals will be announced as soon as Caceres
Veloz returns to the country from United States where he was
accompanying the Minister of Sports, Mr. Felipe Payano in an
official visit.

que concluyó ayer en la moderna cancha del Parque Mirador del Este.
La pareja integrada por Almonte y Velásquez superó en
los tres sets a los favoritos Cristian Cabral y Amaury Martínez,
para llevarse el premio de 60 mil pesos.
El partido concluyó con anotación de 21-19, 14-21 y
15-11, en donde ambos equipos se emplearon a fondo por espacio de
una hora, ante la mirada de los miles de fanáticos que se dieron
cita a la nueva casa del voleibol de arena en la República
Dominicana.
En
la tercera posición finalizaron los jugadores Alex Colón y Alexis
Polanco, superando a Cristian Cabral y Edward Rojas. Mientras que en
la categoría femenina, la pareja conformada por Dreidy Luciano y
Deborah, quienes superaron en tres parciales a Oriana Pérez y Darily
Ravelo, con marcador de 21-13, 18-21 y 15-11.

Annerys Vargas and Eva Cruz led their teams to wins

JUAN, Puerto Rico, January 13, 2006.-
Dominican Annerys Vargas had 13 of her 22 points in
the third set leading the Bayamon Cowgirls to their first victory of
the young season in the Puerto Rico Women Superior League while
defeating Caguas 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-23). Vargas, who played as
middle blocker, had five blocks and one ace among her points. With
the score tied at 23-all in the third set, the big Dominican sealed
the triumph scoring the last two pints for the Cowgirls. Bayamon has
now a 1-2 record and Caguas is 2-2. In the other match of the day,
Juncos erased a 0-2 deficit and edged Ponce in five sets by score of
22-25, 20-25, 25-14, 27-25, 15-7. Eva Cruz and Karina Ocasio had 20
and 19 points respectively for Juncos and Paula Parisi added 13.
American April Ross led all the scorers with 23 for Ponce and Sarai
Alvarez and Dominican Milagros Cabral added 17 and 11 respectively.

Carrera starts with the right foot

JUAN, Puerto Rico, January 10, 2006.- Dominican Evelyn Carrera of
Ponce Lions is the best libero of the Puerto Rican Superior League
after the first five days of competition. The veteran member of the
Dominican Republic National Team leads in defences with 49 and
passing with 39 and has a 9.78 as libero.
Carrera, who was elected as the
best libero for the 2005 tournament, plays as a native due her
Puerto Rican ancestry. Last year, she reached the 1,000 defences
plateau while totalling 409 for the season. Venezuelan Graciela
Marquez of Toa Baja is the best in points with 65 in two matches,
including 60 attacks and American Melissa Elmer of Guaynabo is the
top blocker with 13 in 8 sets. Puerto Rican Vilmarie Mojica is the
best setter with 46 assists in 9 sets.

Larissa Reyes will play in Puerto Rico
AGUADILLA,
Puerto Rico, November 10, 2005.- The Aguadilla Divas announced the
signing of Dominican attacker Larissa Reyes, a junior with
experience playing for the National Team of her country. Aguadilla,
who will be making its first appearance in the Puerto Rican Superior
League next year, still has one foreigner player to be under
contract. William Lopez, the general manager of the new franchise
made the announcement after several days scouting players of the
National Program in the Dominican Republic. The 6-1 Reyes has good
blocking and spiking ability and also a powerful serve. She has the
experience of several international competitions. Reyes is the third
Dominican player announced by Puerto Rican teams for the next year’s
tournament. Before, middle-blocker Annerys Vargas was announced to
come back for another season with Bayamon Cowgirls and Ponce Lions
signed potent attacker Milagros Cabral. Evelyn Carrera, a born
Dominican, plays as native player due her Puerto Rican’s ancestry.

Andres Hevia passed away in Cuba
SANTO DOMINGO, October 26, 2005.- It is with great sadness that we
inform of the death of Andres “Machito” Hevia of Cuba, one of the
most respected referees of all-time whose contributions to the
development of volleyball went beyond the frontiers of the North,
Central American and Caribbean Confederation. The death of Mr. Hevia,
also a fomer player and coach, was announced here by Mr. Omelio
Castillo, president of the Cuban Volleyball Federation. On this year
celebration of the Centennial of Volleyball in Cuba, Hevia was
considered among the top ten most influential persons for the
current prestige of Cuban volleyball. Despite his advanced age and
recent illness, Mr. Hevia was able to attend the IV Women’s Pan
American Cup here in June as member of the refereeing committee in
what was his last official assignment in the Confederation. “Andres
Hevia is part of the history of the Norceca Confederation and we all
will remember him as a great contributor to the improvement of the
volleyball in our region,” said Cristobal Marte, president of
Norceca. “He will be sadly missed by the entire volleyball family.”

Knee Injury Ends Cynthia Barboza's Freshman Season at Stanford
STANFORD,
California, October 24, 2005.-
A torn anterior
cruciate ligament in her left knee has ended the season for Stanford
star freshman volleyball player Cynthia Barboza. Dr. Michael
Dillingham, a Stanford team doctor, confirmed the extent of the
injury in meeting with Barboza on Monday afternoon. Barboza, a
freshman outside hitter who led the Pac-10 in kills, will miss the
rest of the 2005 season. Barboza was enjoying an All-American type
season when she suffered the knee injury during the first play of
the third game in Stanford's victory over California last Friday.
Barboza fell awkwardly to the ground after hitting a kill. She was
carried off the court after lying on the ground in pain for several
minutes while medical personnel tried to determine the extent of the
injury. Barboza, an alternate on the 2004 USA Women’s Olympic
Volleyball Team as a high school senior and a national team player
this past summer, started all 21 matches (66 games) this season and
led the conference in kills (297) and was second on the team in
hitting percentage (.306). Her 4.50 kills per game average was
third-best in the conference. A recent Sports Illustrated article
referred to Barboza as the "nation's top female freshman – in ANY
sport."

Prisilla Rivera was top attacker at Salonpas Cup

PAULO, Brazil, September 3, 2005.- Dominican Prisilla Rivera was the
best attacker at the Salonpas Cup Tournament, a women invitational
event with three Brazilian Teams and squads from Belgium, Cuba and
Dominican Republic. Rivera was positive in a 40.37 percentage of her
killings attempts followed by Brazilian Rosangela Nascimento and
Belgian Virginie de Carne. Alexandra Caso, also from Dominican
Republic, was the top receiver of the preliminary round with a 55.66
percentage, followed by Rivera with 53.77. Brazilian Thaisa Menezes
was the best blocker, followed by fellow countrywoman Edneia Lima
and Dominican Cindy Rondon. Belgians Veerle Van Looy and Frauke
Dirickx were the best server and digger respectively and Brazilian
Flavia Terra was the best at defence. In their last two matches, the
Dominican Republic, represented by Proyecto Nacional, lost 3-0
(25-11, 25-13, 25-13) to Rexona-Ades and 3-0 (25-19, 25-17 y 25-13)
to Finasa-Osasco. In both matches, Rivera was the top scorer with 15
and 10 points respectively. Havana Club lost to Minas Tenis 3-0
(25-14, 25-22 y 25-21) and 3-0 (25-20, 27-25 y 25-21) to Belgium
All-Stars. Yusleynis Alvarez with 10 points and Liannes Simon with
11 were the top Cuban scorers in those matches. The standings after

Salvadorians Medrano and Vargas won in Cabarete
CABARETE,
Puerto Plata, August 15, 2005.- Salvadorians Jeovanny Medrano and
Rafael Vargas won the title of the 2005 Open of Cabarete Men’s Beach
Volleyball Tournament. Medrano and Vargas defeated in the final the
siblings pair of Gilberto and Alexander Villlegas of Costa Rica by
score of 21-15, 21-17. The third place went to the Dominican duo of
Edgar Rojas and Cristian Cabral who beat the also Dominicans
Maximino Pena and Juan Concepcion by score of 21-18, 21-15. The
winners took home a first prize of 2,500 dollars, with 1,800 and
1,000 going to the pairs of second and third places.
The fourth place players took $700.

USA Men Sweep Netherlands
in Finale of Pacific Northwest Tour
PORTLAND, Oregon. – Curt Toppel scored a match-high
15 points to lead the USA Men’s National Volleyball Team to a 3-0
win over the Netherlands in the finale of the Pacific Northwest Tour
Sunday night at the Rose Garden Arena. Toppel had 15 points in the
25-22, 25-23, 25-16 win for the United States , its second victory
out of three matches. Jim Polster added 12 points and in the three
matches he scored 34 points. Riley Salmon tallied 11 points and
David Lee chipped in with 8. Kay van Dijk had 12 points and Marko
Klok posted 11 points for the Dutch. On Monday, both teams travel to
San Diego to take part in the 2005 International Sports Invitational
at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on the campus of the University of San

Netherlands Rebounds to Beat Team USA, 3-1, in Idaho

scored a match-high 23 points to lead five players in double-figures
as the Netherlands overpowered the USA Men’s National Volleyball
Team, 3-1, at the Bank of America Centre Friday night. van
Dijk blasted 17 kills and had a
match-high six blocks as the Dutch overcame a first-set loss to post
a 23-25, 25-22, 29-27, 26-24 victory in the second match of a
three-match Pacific Northwest Tour between the two teams. The United
States won the opening match of the series, 3-0, Thursday night in
Spokane, Washington. The series concludes on Sunday with a match at
the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon. Marko
Klok scored 15 points, Allan van de Loo
and Rob Bontje tallied 12 points apiece
and Wytze Kooistra
added 10 points for Holland in the win. Kyle Robinson scored 13

Dominicans score historic triumph over Japan
NINGBO,
China.- The Dominican Republic recorded its first ever victory over
Japan in a senior event winning today in five emotional sets at the
Women’s World League tournament. The score was 25-23, 26-24, 212-25,
17-25, 15-12. Veteran Yudelkis Bautista was elected as the best
player of the match but it was Cindy Rondon who starred for the
Dominicans at the right moment –the fifth set. Rondon, a rookie in
the Dominican squad, made the most of her chance to play in the
tie-breaker and scored 11 points with superb blocking and powerful
spikes. Annerys Vargas scored 19 and Sofia Heredia (14) and Priscila
Rivera (12) finished also with double figures. Veteran Evelyn
Carrera made 32 defenses and is tied at first place of the libero
statistics while setters Juana Gonzalez and Karla Echenique enjoyed
smooth performances. Coach Francisco Cruz said the combined
western-eastern style of the Dominicans opened the eyes of
technicians who praised the power and speed of the Caribbean team.
The last time Dominican Republic and Japan had played was during the
2003 World Cup in Japan with the host team prevailing in four sets.
The history records a win of Dominican Republic over Japan during
the World Girls’ Championship in Croatia in 2001.

Dominicans continue preparation in China for Grand Prix
TIANJIN,
China, May 18, 2005.- The Dominican Republic Women’s National Team
continued its successful tour playing friendly matches in China in
preparation for the Pan American Cup and the World Grand Prix. In
their last two matches, the Dominicans beat the University of Nankai
and the Tianjin Province Team with splendid performance from Sidarka
Nunez. The potent righthander scored 24 points against the Nankai
Team and followed with 25 against Tianjin.The Dominicans won the
first match by score of 25-22, 25-19, 25-15 with Annerys Vargas
following Nunez with 20 points and Cindy Rondon scoring 9. Against
Tianjin, the score was 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 25-17 and Yudelkis
Bautista totalled 20 points, Rondon added 17 and libero Evelyn
Carrera had 42 defenses.

Rivera again stands out in China

China, May 12, 2005.- Priscila Rivera is finally blossoming in the
star everyone predicted when she emerged into the Dominican Women’s
National Team. The power hitter, who led Los Prados Club to the
championship title in the Metropolitan League of Santo Domingo, was
once again the main weapon of her side in a victory here. Rivera
scored 28 points leading the Dominican Republic to a 3-1 triumph
over the University of Nankai. Both teams were involved in a huge
battle during the first set with the Dominicans finally prevailing
by score of 28-26. The rest of the match went 25-22, 20-25, 25-21.
Promising Dahiana Burgos followed Rivera with a strong performance
totaling 23 points and Cindy Rondon added 16. The Dominican Republic
has a 4-0 record and today plays against the Science & Technology
University.

Annerys Vargas was the star in Dominican Victory

China, May 11, 2005.- Annerys Vargas was the offensive ace of the
Dominican Republic Women National Team who continued its successful
start of its training tour in China. Vargas scored 16 points and her
team captured a straight sets victory over the Science & Technology
University. The Dominicans won by score of 25-12, 25-14, 25-17 and
today will face the University of Nankai who they already beat
twice, in five and three sets respectively. Yudelkis Bautista and
Priscila Rivera each cooperated with 14 joining Vargas in the
Dominican attack. The visitors are preparing for the Pan American
Cup to be played in Santo Domingo in June and for the FIVB World
Grand Prix. Besides the teams from these universities the Dominicans
will play against the Team of the Tianjin Province.

Rivera scores 19 in victory over Nankai University

China, May 10, 2005.- Priscila Rivera scored 19 points and the
Dominican Republic defeated the University of Nankai for second
consecutive day as part of the training camp for the Dominican
Women’s Volleyball National Team. Cindy Rondon and Karla Echenique
followed Rivera as the best scorers for the visitors with 15 and 8
points respectively. The score this time was 25-17, 25-22, 25-23
while in the first match the visitors needed five sets to edge the
students by 25-22, 23-25, 25-16, 17-25, 15-6. Both matches were
played at the Nankai University Gym before good crowds. In the first
one, Sofia Heredia had 27 points, Cindy Rondon 21 and Annerys Vargas
15. Today the Dominicans are scheduled to meet the Science and
Technology University Team for their third of 12 official matches in
China against local teams and the Team of Tainjin who recently won
all its matches during a one-month visit to the Dominican Republic.

Cubans will play a farewell match
HAVANA,
Cuba, May 5, 2005.- Omelio Castillo, President of the Cuban
Volleyball Federation, announced the celebration next Friday of a
farewell match between two women’s sides composed by players of the
National Team before the start of their international schedule of
2005.Their main objectives for the year are to finish among the
three top teams in the Pan American Cup in Santo Domingo, and to
qualify among the leaders of the World Grand Prix.The farewell match
will be played at Kid Chocolate Pavilion and the teams are named Red
and Blue.
The main players of the Red squad are Yumilka Ruiz, Nancy
Carrillo and Daimi Ranirez while on the Blue side will play Zoila
Barros, Martha Sanchez, Rosir Calderon, Anniara Munoz and Liana
Mesa.

women’s crown in Santo Domingo

DOMINGO, April 27, 2005.- Los Prados won the women’s title of the
Santo Domingo Metropolitan League sweeping the final series over
Team Juan Guzman. The fourth and final victory was the easiest one
with Los Prados crushing their rivals by score of 25-16, 25-19,
25-20. During the series, the new champions only conceded one set to
the opposition. Priscilla Rivera, member of the National Team, was
elected the as the MVP of the final series. She topped the scorers
last night with 15 points followed by Ginette Selmo and Bethania
Almanzar with 13 and 10 respectively. “I feel really happy,” said
Rivera. “We played very united and that was a key factor. We felt
very confident in there.” Sidarka Nunez and Dahiana Burgos had 11
and 10 points for Juan Guzman.

Bameso took the men’s title in Santo Domingo

DOMINGO, April 25, 2005.- Team Bameso won the twentieth men’s title
in the history of the franchise taking the final series of the Santo
Domingo
Mmetropolitan
League with a victory in consecutive sets over Jose Marti on Sunday.
With eight crowns over the past nine years, Bameso
crushed its rivals with score of 25-15, 25-20, 25-15 in just 64
minutes. Jose Caceres scored 19 points and Amaury Martinez chipped
in 10 for the champions while Edward Rojas had 13 and Miguel Meran
12 for Jose Marti. Caceres, who scored 142 points in five matches
for an average of 28.4 per game, was elected as the MVP of the final
series. The women’s final series is now 3-0 in favor of Los Prados
who scored a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-22, 25-18) over Juan Guzman.
Priscila Rivera was the top scorer for Los Prados with 15 points and
Ginette Selmo added 10.

Bameso is one victory away from the title

DOMINGO, April 24, 2005.- Bameso moved one victory away of winning
the men’s title of the Santo Domingo Metropolitan League with a
triumph in straight sets over Jose Marti by score of 25-23, 26-24,
25-15. Once again, Jose Caceres was the big difference with his
powerful offense. He scored 19 points and now has 123 in the four
matches played so far in the best-of-seven final series. Amaury
Martinez seconded him with 12. For Jose Marti, Miguel Meran scored
12 points. On the women’s side, Los Prados scored its second victory
without losses in the final series defeating Juan Guzman 25-23,
26-24, 22-25, 25-15. Bethania Almanzar had 15 points for Los Prados
and Ginette Selmo and Priscila Rivera added 14 and 13 respectively.
For Juan Guzman, Sidarka Nunez marked 23 and Dahiana Burgos and Rosa
Medrano each had 15.

Jose Marti scored its first victory

DOMINGO, April 23, 2005.- The Team Jose Marti got its first victory
in the final series of the Men’s Metropolitan League defeating the
favourite Bameso in a huge four-set battle that concluded with
scores of 24-26, 37-35, 32-30 and 25-19. Bameso is still leading the
best-of-seven playoffs with a 2-1 record and the event continues
today with a doubleheader in both genders. Miguel Meran was the top
scorer of Jose Marti with 19 points and Venezuelan Jorge Silva added
18. Others in double figures for the winners were Guillermo
Hernandez and Edward Rojas with 16 and 12 respectively. For Bameso,
Jose Caceres had 40 points and Amaury Martinez cooperated with 11.
On the women’s side, Los Prados started the final series with a
straight sets victory over Juan Guzman with Priscila Rivera and
Ginette Selmo both scoring 15 points. Sidarka Nunez had 20 points
for the losing side. The score was 25-15, 25-23 and 25-19.
